Iedere BMW M3 ontwikkelt zich vroeg of laat tot een collector’s item. Dat geldt helemaal wanneer het een Cabrio betreft, waarvan de productieaantallen altijd een stuk lager liggen dan van de gesloten versie. Niet iedereen vindt het een vanzelfsprekende combinatie, de ultieme performance-uitvoering met een open dak, maar wij zien dat anders. Een cabriolet koop je immers om mooie buitenwegen en bergetappes mee op te zoeken en daar komen het fantastische Motorsport-onderstel, de machtige remmen en de waanzinnige aandrijflijn optimaal tot hun recht. Destijds sloeg de autowereld stijl achterover van een atmosferische motor die 100 pk per liter cilinderinhoud ontwikkelde. Het is de befaamde S50, een 3,2-liter zescilinder 24-klepper, die in een flitsend samenspel met de handgeschakelde zesbak (toen ook een noviteit) elke keer razendsnel in toeren klimt en binnen mum van tijd zijn piek van 321 pk bereikt.

Wat blijft zo’n E36 toch eigenlijk een prachtig tijdloze auto. Je zou hem altijd zo willen parkeren dat je hem schuin van voren ziet, met de M3-spoiler en de gepolijste dubbel-vijfspaaks lichtmetalen wielen prominent in beeld. De Cosmos-zwarte lak glanst letterlijk als nieuw, wat geen verbazing wekt als je weet dat deze BMW slechts 54.000 kilometer heeft afgelegd en naar schatting zo’n negentig procent van zijn leven binnen mocht doorbrengen, met tussendoor uitstapjes naar de dealer voor service volgens een stipt schema. Zo gaat dat in Zwitserland, waar hij nieuw geleverd werd en waar de enige 1ste eigenaar hem keuring naar BMW bracht voor het reguliere onderhoud.

De connaisseur die een blik op het interieur van deze M3 werpt, zal onmiddellijk iets bijzonders constateren, namelijk het mild gemêleerde oppervlak van de bekleding. Dit duidt op buffel-nappaleder, een kostbare optie destijds en typerend voor BMW. In de kleur Magma contrasteert het fraai met het zwarte koetswerk en tevens met het chique donkere wortelnotenhout op het dashboard, de middenconsole, de pookknop en zelfs de handremgreep. Een ingetogen accent, dat extra klasse toevoegt aan een interieur vol luxe, waaronder elektrische stoelverstelling en -verwarming, automatisch geregelde airconditioning, cruise control en de originele BMW Business RDS-radio. Overigens hoort de M3-purist liever het geluid van de hoogtoerige zescilinder weerkaatsen tegen de bergwanden.

Sooner or later, every BMW M3 becomes a collector’s item. This is especially true of the Convertible, which is always produced in far smaller numbers than the saloon version. Not everyone sees the combination of the ultimate performance model with an open roof as a natural fit, but we see it differently. After all, you buy a convertible to seek out beautiful country roads and mountain routes, and that’s where the fantastic Motorsport chassis, the powerful brakes and the incredible powertrain really come into their own. Back then, the motoring world was blown away by a naturally aspirated engine that produced 100 hp per litre of displacement. It is the famous S50, a 3.2-litre six-cylinder 24-valve engine, which, in a dazzling interplay with the six-speed manual gearbox (also a novelty at the time), revs up at lightning speed every time and reaches its peak of 321 hp in no time at all.

The E36 really is such a beautifully timeless car. You’d always want to park it so that you see it from a diagonal front view, with the M3 spoiler and the polished double-five-spoke alloy wheels prominently on display. The Cosmos Black paintwork literally gleams like new, which comes as no surprise when you realise that this BMW has covered just 54,000 kilometres and is estimated to have spent around ninety per cent of its life indoors, with occasional trips to the dealer for servicing according to a strict schedule. That’s how things are done in Switzerland, where it was delivered new and where the sole first owner took it to BMW for regular servicing.

Any connoisseur who takes a look at the interior of this M3 will immediately notice something special: the subtly mottled surface of the upholstery. This is indicative of buffalo nappa leather, a costly option at the time and characteristic of BMW. In Magma, it contrasts beautifully with the black bodywork and also with the elegant dark burl walnut on the dashboard, the centre console, the gear knob and even the handbrake handle. A subtle accent that adds extra class to an interior brimming with luxury, including electric seat adjustment and heating, automatic air conditioning, cruise control and the original BMW Business RDS radio. Incidentally, the M3 purist would rather hear the sound of the high-revving six-cylinder engine echoing off the mountain walls.
