De connaisseur slaat meteen aan op deze Maserati GranTurismo Sport. Op grond van zijn specifieke voorbumper met boemerangvormige roosters, koolstofvezel motorkap met luchtinlaat en dubbel-vijfspaaks 20-inch wielen presenteert hij zich ogenschijnlijk als een MC Stradale, maar in werkelijkheid blijkt hij minstens zo exclusief. Het betreft namelijk één van de 400 exemplaren uit de gelimiteerde serie Special Edition, waarmee Il Tridente in 2017 zestig jaar GT-geschiedenis vierde. De couturiers in Modena onderstreepten dit met een carbon achterspoiler, splitter, dorpelkappen en buitenspiegels, zonder daarin door te slaan. Immers, zo’n Italiaans kunstwerk, dat getuigt van een tijdloze schoonheid, moet vooral puur en ongerept blijven.

In de cockpit, een term die de lading volledig dekt bij deze Maserati, gaat het feest gewoon door. Alleen al op de rode stiksels raak je niet uitgekeken. Ze symboliseren de legendarische drietand, wat in de vier hoofdsteunen bekroond wordt door het daadwerkelijke Maserati-logo. Naar beste traditie is alcantara toegepast in de bekleding, maar de hoofdrol vervult leder van de vermaarde fabrikant Poltrona Frau. Voor een racy accent zorgen koolstofvezel elementen rond het instrumentarium en in het dashboard, de deurpanelen, de instaplijsten en de schakelpeddels. Deze laatste leggen rechtstreekse link met de meest zorgeloze transmissie uit het GranTurismo-programma, namelijk een Duitse ZF-automaat met zes trappen en vier verschillende rijmodi. Al net zo robuust is de samen met Ferrari ontwikkelde 32-kleps V8, die zonder drukvulling 460 pk uit 4,7 liter tovert en uithaalt als een Italiaanse tenor. Om kippenvel van te krijgen, keer op keer.

Vormt een Maserati GranTurismo Sport Special Edition van zichzelf al iets bijzonders, dat geldt helemaal voor dit specifieke exemplaar, waarmee de eerste eigenaar tussen 2017 en heden slechts 17.000 kilometer aflegde. Overbodig te zeggen haast dat dit raspaard er op alle fronten net zo nieuw uitziet als toen het de stal verliet en voor het eerst mocht draven over de Duitse wegen. Feitelijk hoeven we al net zo min te benadrukken dat dit gelimiteerde type zich zal ontwikkelen tot een absoluut collector’s item… als het dat al niet is. Over de emoties die deze auto opwekt zullen we zwijgen, want dan wordt een proefrit (voor serieus geïnteresseerden) des te overweldigender.

The connoisseur will immediately be drawn to this Maserati GranTurismo Sport. With its distinctive front bumper featuring boomerang-shaped grilles, carbon-fibre bonnet with air intake and 20-inch double-five-spoke wheels, it appears to be an MC Stradale, but in reality it proves to be just as exclusive. It is, in fact, one of just 400 examples from the limited-run Special Edition series, with which Il Tridente celebrated sixty years of GT history in 2017. The designers in Modena emphasised this with a carbon rear spoiler, splitter, side skirts and wing mirrors, without going overboard. After all, such an Italian work of art, which embodies timeless beauty, must above all remain pure and unspoilt.

In the cockpit – a term that perfectly captures the essence of this Maserati – the spectacle continues. You simply can’t get enough of the red stitching alone. It symbolises the legendary trident, which is crowned by the actual Maserati logo on the four headrests. In keeping with tradition, Alcantara has been used for the upholstery, but the star of the show is leather from the renowned manufacturer Poltrona Frau. Carbon fibre elements around the instrument cluster and in the dashboard, the door panels, the door sills and the gearshift paddles add a racy touch. The latter provide a direct link to the most carefree transmission in the GranTurismo range, namely a German ZF six-speed automatic with four different driving modes. Equally robust is the 32-valve V8 developed in collaboration with Ferrari, which conjures up 460 hp from 4.7 litres without turbocharging and roars like an Italian tenor. It gives you goosebumps, time and time again.

While a Maserati GranTurismo Sport Special Edition is something special in its own right, this is particularly true of this specific example, which has covered just 17,000 kilometres with its first owner between 2017 and the present day. It goes without saying that this thoroughbred looks just as new in every respect as it did when it left the showroom and first took to the German roads. In fact, we hardly need to emphasise that this limited-edition model is set to become an absolute collector’s item… if it isn’t already. We shall say no more about the emotions this car evokes, for that will make a test drive (for those seriously interested) all the more overwhelming.
