Renault Alpine Coupe (2016)

Scoop: Alpine Reportedly Begins Field Tests of New Coupe in…Lotus Guise?

It's not at all unusual for carmakers to cleverly disguise their future models, especially during the early development phase when they use mules to test the platform and mechanical components. These test mules combine a body of a different model with the underpinnings of an upcoming new car, and if not always, most of the times, said body comes from the same brand or at least group (i.e. this Alfa Giulietta-bodied Jeep mule).

What's very rare is for one carmaker to hide and test a new platform under the body of a car from an unrelated company, which is what our spies claim is happening with this Alpine test mule that's wearing a Lotus Exige outfit– albeit modified with wider tracks. At this time, we cannot confirm or deny this information.

Besides the French license plates on the car, our spy photographer told us that the mule was being tested by Swedish suspension company Öhlins together with several other models from Renault Sport such as the Megane RS and Clio.

The actual production Alpine coupe that is being developed by parent company Renault and Caterham as a joint project is due to hit the market in 2016. Renault group boss Carlos Tavares has said that the as-of-yet unnamed Alpine mid-engine sports car will be similar in philosophy and possibly even pricing to the Alfa Romeo 4C. Power will likely come from a 2.0-liter turbocharged four producing somewhere around 280hp, which should be good enough for top notch performance numbers given its lightweight construction.

Renault Boss Says Alpine Sports Car Will Get 280Hp and Retro Styling Cues
tuesday, April16, 2013

Before Renault brings out their brand new Alpine sports car, sometime in 2016, we can already take a look at one of its direct competitors, the Alfa Romeo 4C, a car which, at least on paper, seems very similar. The Alpine will also cost about the same, and offer similar performance, as British magazine Autocar has learnt from the group boss, Carlos Tavares, that the new mid-engined sports car will have around 280 hp.

He also said that styling is 70 percent done, and as all fans of the brand are expecting, it will be a retro-inspired vehicle, which will get the trademark “arrowhead nose.” The engine powering it will most likely be a turbocharged two-liter unit, but apparently, it is still being decided whether to give it the dual-clutch EDC gearbox or a regular six-speed manual – we say just give it both options and let the buyer choose.

Nevertheless, since they went all-auto on the Clio RS, a more mainstream car that could have received a manual, it is likely to happen again, with the Alpine. They do have about three years to get it working properly, because some who have reviewed the latest Clio RS have complained about its slow response times.

However, if you don’t want the Alpine, Renault’s partner Caterham is also making its own version of the car, underpinned by the same basic architecture, but rumored to use a Toyota-sourced engine, instead of a French unit.

With Tavares no longer involved, Renault divorces Alpine partner

Automotive News Europe | April 2, 2014 06:01 CET

Renault appears to be scaling back its ambitions for the sporty Alpine subbrand but the project will still go ahead, a source familiar with the development work told me.

Renault has ended its partnership with UK sports car maker Caterham, its Formula One racing partner, to revive Alpine but "it's an amicable divorce,” the source said.

The termination will not affect the 300 workers tied to the project at the Dieppe, France, factory, where Renault makes the Clio and Clio RS.

The departure of Carlos Tavares, Renault’s former chief operating officer who is now PSA/Peugeot-Citroen CEO, had cast doubt on the company’s continued commitment to Alpine.

An avid racecar driver, Tavares was passionate about breathing more life into the Renault brand by bringing back the famous sports car, but he likely had a different vision of what Alpine could be, compared with CEO Carlos Ghosn's agenda, according to Carlos Da Silva, an analyst at IHS Automotive.

"Without Tavares, the equation becomes all the more complex," Da Silva said. He believes there is a 50 percent probability that Renault could kill the project. If it does go through, it could “really turn into something substantially different from the fantasized A110 rebirth,” he said.

Reports have said that Ghosn was not happy when Caterham Chairman Tony Fernandes talked about expanding the partnership to develop a Range Rover Evoque rival and a sporty city car for Asian markets.

Renault says the project remains on schedule and that an Alpine model will launch in 2016 as planned. Renault’s existing F1 agreements with Caterham will remain in place, which includes the supply of engines and technology to Caterham’s F1 team, the Renault source said.

It seems that the only car that Renault will launch badged as an Alpine will be a small sports model to compete against the vehicles such as the Toyota GT86 and Audi TT.

Like Nissan’s sports car flagship, the GTR, Alpine could have business value as a marketing tool, even if it only brings a few thousand sales a year.

Renault stopped building Alpines in 1995 after four decades because of poor profitability. Sales peaked at about 2,000 cars a year in the 1980s. Reviving the subbrand could cost up to 1 billion euros, according to a 2012 estimate from Bankhaus Metzler.

“As a business case, Alpine was, is, and will remain a difficult one,” Da Silva said.

Renault expects to make 3,000 Alpine sports cars a year

Production starts next year, sales being in 2017

Automotive News Europe | January 28, 2015 12:36 CET
PARIS (Reuters) -- A Renault executive today revealed the output expectations for the automaker's Alpine-badged sports car.

"In terms of scale, on average [annual production] volume will be about 3,000 cars, with a peak of 5,000 initially due to the novelty factor," Alpine head Bernard Ollivier told Reuters in an interview.

Renault plans to launch production of the sporty brand at the end of 2016 and start selling Alpine models in Europe and key emerging market economies the following year, Ollivier, interviewed on the sidelines of an auto festival in Paris, said.

News of the revival coincides with Renault's celebration of the Alpine brand's 60th. Alpine have not been made since 1995. The new sports car will have a rear-mounted engine and be build at Renault's plant in Dieppe, northern France.

Alpine AS1 to start Renault's new Alpine sports car family

Renault has kicked the resurgence of the Alpine brand up a gear. In an exclusive interview with Renault executive vice president, Bruno Ancelin, Auto Express has learned a family of Alpine models is being planned, which would follow the arrival of the brand’s two-seater sports car – shown here in our exclusive images – in 2016.

Speaking at the Geneva Motor Show, Ancelin said: “We are working on the first car, and out of the first car we are working on the line-up. So model number one, which we call the AS1 – Alpine Sport 1– we need to see further and [then we’ll] look to the complementary models we will have in the line-up.”

Ancelin isn’t taking the revival of the historic Alpine brand lightly either – he spoke openly about Audi and Porsche as its premium sporty rivals. To ensure Renault can compete at that level, Alpine is assessing all options to make it work, including taking expertise from alliance members Nissan and Daimler.

Plans to revive the Alpine name were first revealed back in 2012, when Renault and Caterham joined forces to co-develop a new sports car. Last year, however, the two brands parted ways, with Renault taking full control of the project. The project suffered a further setback in summer 2013 when Carlos Tavares, then Renault COO and the driving force behind the Alpine resurrection, departed to become president of PSA Peugeot Citroen. Those bumps in the road haven’t affected Renault’s momentum in developing and delivering an entire new model range, with the possibility of a more practical Alpine and hybrid tech also under consideration.

“What we are sure of is that we cannot revive a brand or create a brand with a single model. It’s not sustainable to have a single model, it’s impossible,” said Ancelin.

“For example, if you want to be sustainable in some markets you need a hybrid in the line-up. We’d have highly differentiated models.”

Ancelin would not be drawn on how much the future Alpines would differ from one another, but did state that to ensure sustainability of the brand it has to be open to various ideas.

“Which technology and which kind of engines do we need, which kind of body styles, will all of them be sporty cars or will some of them be SUV?” he said. “We must address all these questions.”

One thing Ancelin didn’t shy away from was reinstating the fact that the first model must be a “low weight and sporty car”. But he was keen to point out that the project will not be rushed and the profitability of the brand must be established first.

Renault readies Porsche Boxster, Audi TT rival

Alpine sports car may be unveiled at Le Mans

Bruce Gain
Automotive News Europe | May 13, 2015 06:01 CET
RENNES, France -- Renault may unveil its first modern Alpine sports car at Le Mans endurance race next month, a report said. The concept would preview a production car that would rival models such as the Audi TT and Porsche Boxster.

Renault is reviving the Alpine brand 20 years after it was axed to create an image booster as it seeks to move upscale in Europe to improve profitability.

The automaker could unveil an Alpine concept at Le Mans on June 13 and 14 after CEO Carlos Ghosn approved a 600 million euros investment into the brand, according to French magazine Challenges.

The concept previews a sports car with an output of up to 250hp that would be priced between 30,000 and 35,000 euros, the magazine said. The price would be just below the cost of an Audi TT and much less than the Porsche Boxster.

The sports car could be followed by an Alpine-badged SUV, the report said.

Renault declined to comment on the report.

Bernard Ollivier, head of Alpine, told Reuters in January that the automaker will launch Alpine production at the end of next year and sell the sports car in Europe and key emerging markets in 2017. The car will have a rear-mounted engine and production will be about 3,000 units a year with a peak of 5,000. It will be built in Dieppe in northern France, he said.

The Alpine car will have a lightweight design with technologies from its alliance partners Nissan and Daimler, a source directly involved in the model’s development told Automotive News Europe.

Some observers had questioned whether the Alpine project would survive after its main backer, former chief operating officer Carlos Tavares moved to rival PSA/Peugeot-Citroen as CEO. The project also suffered a setback when Renault last year ended a partnership to develop Alpine with UK specialist sports car maker Caterham over financing issues.

Renault unveiled an Alpine concept, the A110-50 concept car on the sidelines of the 2012 Monaco F1 Grand Prix. The car was powered by a 400-hp, 3.5-liter V-6 engine mounted in a mid-rear position.

Alpine was founded in the 1950s and became well-known among sports-car enthusiasts for the A110 and Berlinette, which was introduced in 1962. Renault halted Alpine production in 1995 because of poor profitability. Sales peaked at about 2,000 cars a year in the 1980s.
