Beijing Auto BJ80 debuts in Beijing as G-Class copycat
G-Class' ugly Chinese brother
Beijing Auto introduced at this year's Beijing Motor Show the near-production BJ80 concept.
They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery but most likely Mercedes-Benz isn't too happy to see its iconic G-Class being transformed into this awkward Chinese replica. It's not even a full knockoff because the BJ80 mixes up G-Wagen styling cues with Land Rover Discovery-derived headlights and a Hummer-like grille.
The vehicle is actually derived from the military-spec 80 VJ which later evolved into a B80V civilian variant. The BJ80 is a beefed up civilian version with a more aggressive body and 21-inch alloy wheels while under the hood it packs a V8 4.0-liter of unknown specifications.
It should be noted this isn't actually a replica per se since BAIC Motor has reached an agreement in late 2012 with Daimler which allows them to use Mercedes-Benz’s architectures but they could have done a better job in the design department for this BJ80.
