Future Renault EVs will revive classic models, report says

PARIS – New Renault CEO Luca de Meo will revive some best-selling models from the brand’s past as electric cars under a turnaround plan aimed at improving sales and repositioning the struggling automaker, two sources familiar with the matter said.

De Meo is due to unveil his strategy update on Jan. 14, which is expected to focus on the product ranges the company will bet on -- including a nod to Renault's past.

The loss-making French firm has already announced 2 billion euros in cost savings and job cuts in its bid to improve margins and boost the group's performance in an auto market hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic and under pressure to produce cleaner vehicles.

De Meo, who has said he wanted to lean on the brand's French roots, will unveil an electric version of the now-phased-out Renault 4 small cars introduced in the early 1960s, the two sources said.

The Renault e-Plein Air EV concept, based on the Renault 4, was created in 2019 for a classic car exhibition. It was a collaboration between Renault Design and a spare parts company.

There will also be a revived, electric version of another popular 1970s and 1980s model, based on the R5 or its successor the "Super Cinq,” the sources added.

Renault declined to comment.

"Luca de Meo is very focused on the products, and his strategy plan will be too," one of the sources said.

Among other Renault brands, the group will also present three new electric models for the Alpine sports car brand, the sources added.

One of Renault's challenges will be to create distinct identities for each of the brands, which also include low-cost Dacia and Russia’s Lada.

The company has already indicated that it wants to focus on a smaller number of models and hone in on profitable products, especially in the compact segment, as well as potentially exiting some markets, reversing the global push based on volumes under former boss Carlos Ghosn.

Sources had previously told Reuters that well-known but slow-selling models such as the Espace minivan could be among those that are now phased out.

Wutwut?

RENAULT will reinvent a number of its classic models as electric cars as part of a bold turnaround plan set to be unveiled by new boss Luca de Meo, according to reports. Former Seat boss de Meo was given the top job at the French giant last year. He has been working on a new business plan to boost sales and reposition the firm, which began last September with the unveiling of a major internal restructure. De Meo is now set to unveil the next phase in his plan on Thursday January 14, in an event billed as a ‘Renaulution’. Sources state that De Meo’s plan will focus on future product ranges and will include the revival of at least 2 classic nameplates to strengthen the focus on Renault’s French heritage.

They will include an electric reinvention of the 4L, based on the city car originally launched in the 1960s as a rival to the Mini and Fiat 500. An electric version of the Renault 5, originally offered in 2 generations from 1972 until it was replaced by the Clio in 1996, is also reportedly set to be revealed. No more details of the models have been given, but they could use the new Renault – Nissan -Mitsubishi alliance CMF-EV electric platform, which Renault will first use for the forthcoming production version of the Megane eVision. The Megane eVision is a crossover that uses the long-running nameplate of the firm’s family hatch, and also features a retro-infused design with numerous nods to Renault’s past.

As with the Megane, reviving classic model names such as the 4 and 5 would be a way for Renault to pitch early electric models to a more style-focused audience, in a similar way to how Fiat has positioned its new electric 500. Renault will reveal 3 electric models for its Alpine subbrand. Renault bosses have been considering turning Alpine into an electric-only performance brand, with a reshuffle last year securing the firm’s long-term future. Do Meo’s plan is also set to include culling several long-running models that have waned in popularity in recent years, including the Espace.

Ik zag die ook in gerenderde vorm voorbij komen op worldscoop forum. Maar of Renault dit voor ogen heeft met het weer in leven roepen van de 4 en de 5?
Vind het er wel kek uit zien!

Same difference.

RIDE-HAILING VS. RIDE-SHARING. WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE?
Transportation Network Companies (TNCs), like Uber, Lyft, and Via, are often hailed as “the future of public transport” — providing a customized, convenient solution that claims to take cars off the road. Many describe these as ride-sharing or ride-hailing services — using the two terms interchangeably. However, the two are different experiences.

• Ride-hailing is when a rider “hails” or hires a personal driver to take them exactly where they need to go. The transportation vehicle is not shared with any other riders, nor does it make several stops along a route.
• Ride-sharing, by contrast, is synonymous with carpooling. It is literally the process in which a rider shares a vehicle with other riders. It is not personal transportation, as the space is shared, and it will make stops to pick up other riders.
