Spied for the first time in mule form, here are photos of the next generation Volkswagen Jetta VI cold weather testing in Lapland. Wearing the body of a Jetta V model, it appears to have a longer wheelbase than normal, the front bumper fit is slightly off and the front wheel arches seem wider than normal too.
Known in most markets as the Jetta it also goes by the names Bora, Sagitar, Vento and Atlantic. The first generation Jetta in 1980 was targeted to the American market as a Golf with a trunk. Since then the Jetta has become the best-selling European car in North America unlike its more internationally famous Golf sibling.
Lately though, starting with Jetta V, VW has sought to distance the car more from the Golf's younger, sportier, compact image and closer to an Audi A4 by placing it a little more upscale as a family semi-executive sedan. The current model Jetta V was launched in Europe in 2005 and our spied successor is expected to launch in 2012.

FIRST ON 3: Image of Chattanooga VW Car Revealed
CHATTANOOGA (WRCB ) - Channel 3 Eyewitness News has obtained the first image of what the photographer calls the "test mule" for the new mid-size sedan (NMS) that Volkwagen will produce at the new plant in Chattanooga. The image was captured by zoom lens within the past few days in Germany as the car was being loaded on to a transporter.
The car in the photograph contains a sign in the windshield that reads "VW 411 NMS." The letters NMS have been publicly referred to by Volkswagen as the code name for the new Chattanooga vehicle.
We shared a picture of the car with a corporate official with Volkwagen who told us, "Unfortunately, this is not the NMS."
"This vehicle is built on the Jetta chassis which may also include some components of a new midsize sedan (NMS) being tested."
That means the car in the picture obtained by Channel 3 Eyewitness News does likely contain elements of the design. The car that will be built in Chattanooga before 2011 will go through other revisions before the final design is revealed. While it is not the actual car, it is what professionals in the industry call the "test mule."
The image does match the description our crew heard while visiting VW headquarters in Wolfsburg, Germany last month. This car is the very first test mule ever photographed. A "test mule" is a vehicle equipped with experimental or prototype components for testing. Automakers will use the test car before a full pre-production is built to find problems. Test mules are drivable but are not the final version.
In contrast to most future vehicle plans, Volkswagen has openly mentioned the NMS and what they hope to accomplish with this vehicle, as well as required amenities.
Some of those remarks have included the following:
Generous legroom
Large cargo / trunk area
More and super-sized cup holders (than several other VW vehicles)
Improved interiors
ABS with front and rear disc brakes
Ample airbags
Interface with various mobile devices
Six-speed double clutch (DSG) transmission or 5 speed manual
FSI and TDI powerplants
Possible AWD option
Initially, engines and transmissions will be manufactured in Mexico the same ones as found in the New Beetle and Jetta. This test mule as clearly seen on the paper affixed to the windshield is powered by VWs 2.5-liter I5.
In addition to the North American market, VW may be also developing this platform for the Chinese market.

| VW NMS (new mid-market sedan) [Spied again]
Volkswagen has some pretty ambitious sales goals for the U.S. market in the coming years, with the bulk of those plans centering around one new VW model — the new mid-market sedan, or NMS for short. Our spy photographers managed to catch-up with the future Toyota Camry-fighter, marking the first time the vehicle has been spotted in the United States.
Although these are simply low-resolution camera phone images, this is the very first time Volkswagen’s soon-to-be Chattanooga-built “mid-market” sedan has ever been spotted (and photographed) in the United States. The new sedan is intended to go head-to-head with the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry.
Referred to as the NMS, this new car will fit in-between the Jetta and Passat in VW’s lineup, and will likely have a starting price of around $20,000.

VW has hinted that the new sedan will boast generous legroom, a larger trunk, bigger cup holders, improved interior quality, a six-speed dual clutch transmission, gas and diesel powerplants and the possibility of all-wheel drive.
Initially, engines and transmissions will be manufactured in Mexico – the same ones as found in the New Beetle and Jetta. A previously-spotted test mule – as clearly seen on the paper affixed to the windshield – was powered by VW’s 2.5-liter I5.

VW’s new Tennessee plant is expected to be up and running by early 2011, so look for the NMS to hit the market sometime after that.

*Even een verzoek doen voor een nieuwe topictitel, dit is namelijk het topic voor de NMS (New Midsize Sedan) en niet voor de Jetta, a.k.a. NCS (New Compact Sedan). Nogmaals voor alle duidelijkheid: de NMS gaat gebouwd worden in de VS, komt niet naar Europa en wordt een concurrent voor de Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, Nissan Altima, Mazda6, Hyundai Sonata, Kia Optima, Chevrolet Malibu, Saturn Aura, Pontiac G6, Ford Fusion, Mercury Milian e.a., waar de huidige Passat te duur is om te concurreren met die modellen, o.a. vanwege de import uit Europa en omdat het model niet is afgestemd op de Amerikaanse smaak. De NCS/Jetta komt wél naar Europa en zal waarschijnlijk net als de huidige in Mexico van de band rollen.

Ik vind de NMS er op de schets trouwens goed uitzien. De auto lijkt heel wat fraaier te worden dan de huidige Passat sedan, al is dat mijns inziens niet zo moeilijk. Weinig bijzonder wel, maar de Phaeton-achtige neus en de raamlijn met Hofmeister-knik kan me wel bekoren. Afwachten of de auto een beetje aan de hoge verwachtingen van de schets kan voldoen.
